This task involved mark making in 5 second bursts for exercise 3, and then taking more considered approach to mark making to fill the rest of the A1 sheet in order to complete exercise 4.
I found it fun to create marks on this scale. I don’t think I’ve ever worked on a piece of A1 before, and I enjoyed how expressive it can be to work at a larger scale and to move your whole body to make flowing marks rather than just your hands/wrist.
Working whilst stood was also a refreshing change. I think it allows fit much more freedom of movement and expression as you arent confined by a chair.
I enjoyed watching the marks change in shape and style organically as the willow charcoal reduced in size and crumbled. There are some lovely marks that came from a chipped piece of charcoal that produced two lines instead of one.
I also like the marks made from using the side of the charcoal. They have a textured quality that was neither from the paper or the wall. It was purely from how the willow charcoal was made, with little peaks and troughs showing up as the charcoal was swept across the paper.
Below is a photograph of the complete A1 sheet of marks. I have also included a gallery of close ups of marks I really liked.
